A 15-year-old Indian expatriate tragically drowned after being caught in powerful water currents while swimming at Al Mamzar beach. The teenager, a student at a Dubai-based Indian school, was enjoying an evening outing with his siblings and parents on Friday when the accident occurred.
According to social workers familiar with the case, both the boy and his older sister were swept away by the currents. 'The alarmed family immediately alerted the lifeguards who quickly responded,' stated Ibrahim Berike, a social worker and volunteer with the Kerala Muslim Cultural Centre. 'They managed to rescue his sister, but the boy was pulled further into the water. His body was later recovered.'
Berike further explained that both parents were on the shore watching their children when the incident took place. 'Both youngsters were experienced swimmers and were simply taking a casual swim when they suddenly began to be pulled under,' he recounted. 'The mother said the boy vanished in an instant, and she is still in shock, unsure of what exactly transpired. It must have been an exceptionally strong undercurrent.'
The family, originally from the southern Indian state of Kerala, has been residing in the UAE for several years. 'He was the third of four siblings and a very sweet boy,' said a relative who preferred to remain anonymous. 'He was always well-behaved and spoke politely to everyone at family gatherings. We are praying for the family to find the strength to endure this difficult time.'
The boy will be laid to rest in Dubai following the completion of necessary paperwork and formalities, the relative added.
