The 2024 Barcelona Superyacht Regatta, a three-day racing event, was held in conjunction with the 37th America’s Cup from 4 to 6 October 2024. Winners V and Halekai emerged victorious in their respective Performance and Cruising Class races. Organized by the Real Club Nà€utic de Barcelona (RCNB) and BWA Yachting, the regatta was sanctioned by the SuperYacht Racing Association (SYRA). The Barcelona regatta is part of the Premier Regatta Series, which runs parallel to the Louis Vuitton 37th America's Cup, and is organized in collaboration with America’s Cup Events (ACE).
The starting line for the 2024 Barcelona Superyacht Regatta was situated just a few nautical miles from the Louis Vuitton Cup Final, creating an electrifying atmosphere. Some crew members even joked at the Skippers Meeting about keeping an eye on the television while racing. The America's Cup was a significant draw for the sailing community, as Captain Toby Clarke of Jasi noted.
As the superyachts set sail, INEOS Britannia secured a thrilling victory over Italy, qualifying for the America's Cup for the first time in six decades. Meanwhile, back at Port Vell, celebrations continued late into the night.
Halekai, a newcomer to the regatta scene, shone on the first day, overcoming technical issues to lead the Cruising Class. Her navigator, Jonny Malbon, remarked on their fortunate wind conditions. In the Performance Class, V claimed the top spot, followed by Nefertiti and Jasi.
Superyacht Regattas provide adventurous owners with the opportunity to test their vessels in unique ways. Most yachts in the race were owner-driven, with many integrating professional crew seamlessly into their operations. Effective teamwork was crucial for success.
The second day saw a challenging wind pattern, with a 12-14 knot breeze shifting in two directions. V maintained its lead in the Performance Class, with Jasi advancing past Nefertiti. Halekai continued to excel in the Cruising Class, completing the course in two hours and 28 minutes.
However, Esense and Fidelis faced difficulties, with Esense recording a NSC and Fidelis ending with an RET. Fidelis captain Jono Johnston remarked, "When racing a 56-metre Perini Navi, you have to enjoy the experience!"
Despite hopes for stronger winds, the race was canceled at 2.30 pm. The Prize Giving ceremony was moved forward, allowing crews to celebrate their victories in the Race Village.
The winners of the 2024 Barcelona Superyacht Regatta were: V, followed by Jasi and Nefertiti in the Performance Class. In the Cruising Class, Halekai took the top prize, with Esense and Fidelis following. In superyacht racing, every participant is a winner, taking home not only a commemorative cup but also cherished memories of being part of a historic sailing event.
