Tesla has maintained its lead in the electric vehicle (EV) market for more than ten years, offering reliable, cutting-edge, and speedy vehicles. The company is also led by a charismatic CEO who has cultivated a 'cool' image around his cars, making them highly desirable. Dislodging Tesla from its pinnacle seems nearly unattainable, yet its vehicles are notably pricey and have uninspiring interiors. So, what's the next best alternative? Enter a Chinese firm that is dominating its home EV market, including Tesla models, with a diverse lineup of EVs and PHEVs. Today, I'm evaluating one of its entry-level offerings, the 2024 BYD ATTO 3.
The ATTO 3 is a compact SUV, measuring 4,455 mm in length and 1,875 mm in width, comparable in size to a Mazda CX-5 but smaller. Its exterior design is not revolutionary but features an aerodynamic shape with soft lines and distinct elements that make it recognizable. Notable features include corrugated lines on the bumpers, a tail lamp that spans the width of the body, rotor-style 18-inch alloys, and the bold 'BUILD YOUR DREAMS' lettering on the tailgate.
The interior of the ATTO 3 stands out with its unique and engaging design elements. Unlike the monotonous minimalism of Tesla cabins, the ATTO 3 offers a refreshingly characterful interior. Highlights include a textured two-tone dashboard, distinctive bangle-like air vents, guitar-style door bins with actual strings, and perforated leatherette seats in a two-tone scheme. The standout feature is a massive 12.8-inch screen that can rotate 90 degrees with a touch of a button, showcasing impressive infotainment graphics.
Driving the ATTO 3 in Dubai felt light and responsive, though not as swift as a Tesla. The vehicle is powered by a single motor drawing from a 60.5kWh battery, offering a claimed range of 420 km. While it delivered around 400 km in practice, this is sufficient to mitigate range anxiety. Charging options include a 7 kW AC outlet and an 80 kW DC outlet for rapid recharging. Safety features are robust, including an over-enthusiastic ADAS suite, a high-quality 360-degree camera, and a 5-Star Euro NCAP safety rating.
Priced at Dh149,900, the 2024 BYD ATTO 3 significantly undercuts most Tesla models. It boasts an appealing size, attractive design, and a well-equipped cabin with numerous conveniences. Its urban drivability and adequate power make it a strong contender for EV buyers. Although reliability and resale value remain to be seen, the included warranties and service contracts are compelling.
