The first-generation 2018 Volkswagen (VW) Teramont initially appeared as a large and somewhat unremarkable SUV, notable primarily for its 17 cupholders. However, with each subsequent iteration, it has grown increasingly appealing, eventually securing the title of the bestselling vehicle in VW's current lineup. For 2024, Volkswagen has completely revamped the Teramont, introducing a refreshed exterior and interior, along with a new turbocharged engine. The question remains: can it surpass its predecessor, or has it lost its luster? We took the top-spec R-Line trim for a spin on Dubai roads to uncover the answer.

The Teramont has become a recognizable presence in the UAE, and the new model retains its stylistic essence with minor enhancements to attract the UAE's discerning audience. It continues to lean more towards a crossover than a full 4x4, measuring 5,103mm in length, 1,990mm in width, and 1,787mm in height. Its substantial size ensures visibility on the road and ample interior space. The blacked-out grille and sporty front valance distinguish the R-Line from lower trims, which feature chrome slatted grilles. A new LED DRL strip connects the two outboard C-shaped DRLs and LED headlamps, while all trims boast a one-piece rear lamp that spans the width. Exclusive to the R-Line are the chrome quad-exhaust finishes and stylish 21-inch wheels. Despite its practicality, the Teramont exudes enough flair to compete with the best in its class. The only thing holding it back might be the badge.

The interior remains largely unchanged, focusing on the new 12-inch floating infotainment display, replacing the previous smaller integrated unit. It is paired with a 10.25-inch fully configurable instrument screen, both offering straightforward, useful, and readable menus. The Teramont features a soft-touch dash, padded leatherette-trimmed door and console panels, metallic satin and piano black details, enhancing the cabin's ambiance. A panoramic sunroof and a 30-colour ambient lighting system add to the cabin's appeal. However, the plastic wood dash accents might not impress Gen Z. The 10-way power-adjustable front leather seats are comfortable, and the second row offers generous knee and headroom. The third row is accessible and spacious enough for two adults, outperforming many other 3-row SUVs.

The unique 2-level, bi-directional outboard air vents not only look good but also optimize the drafts of the efficient 3-zone climate control. Rear-seat occupants benefit from separate A/C controls, though their capacitive nature can be frustrating. The Teramont R-Line is powered by a new turbocharged 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine, replacing the old 4-cylinder and 3.6-litre VR6 engines. It delivers a solid 273 PS output and 370 Nm of max torque, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. The Teramont is equipped with a nicely sized 3-spoke steering wheel and a stubby transmission toggle lever, enhancing its modern feel. The seating position, visibility, and light steering make it easy to maneuver in the city, while the engine provides sufficient power for daily use.

The Teramont rides smoothly, handling bumps and undulations with ease. With Volkswagen's 4MOTION all-wheel drive system, it delivers confident traction and predictability at all reasonable speeds, ideal for a family vehicle. While it can handle beach drives, serious off-roading would require upgrades. Observed fuel economy is decent at 14.8 L/100 km, with a stop/start system helping to improve efficiency. The Teramont is packed with features necessary for a family wagon, including a wireless smartphone charger, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and multiple USB-C ports. The R-Line's Harman Kardon audio system delivers good sound quality. Storage options are plentiful, with a commodious boot offering 583 litres of storage, expanding to 2,735 litres with the rear rows folded flat.

In terms of safety, the Teramont includes a lane centring system, head-up display, 360-degree camera, and adaptive cruise control. The Forward Collision Warning & Braking system provides an added layer of security. The 2024 Volkswagen Teramont maintains its well-rounded family SUV status, offering no qualms about pageantry in the R-Line trim. However, the less refined 4-cylinder engine and capacitive touch A/C controls slightly diminish its overall appeal. Starting at Dh187,723, the Teramont comes with a four-year/60,000km service package, a five-year warranty, and three years of roadside assistance.
