The confetti from last night's British Independent Film Awards has barely settled, but the Hollywood Foreign Press Association is already making headlines with the unveiling of the 2025 Golden Globes nominees. While the Golden Globes may have lost some of their luster in recent years, the nominations often serve as a reliable indicator for the upcoming Oscars and BAFTAs. This year, the spotlight is on Jacques Audiard's trans coming-of-age drama-musical gangland thriller, Emilia Pérez, which leads with 10 nominations. Following closely are Brady Corbet's monumental deconstruction of the American Dream, The Brutalist, with 7 nominations, and Edward Berger's papal conspiracy thriller, Conclave, with 6 nominations.
All three films are contenders for top honors, including Best Motion Picture — Drama (and Comedy/Musical for Emilia Pérez) and Best Director. They share the stage with other notable films such as A Complete Unknown, Dune: Part Two, Challengers, Wicked, Anora, and The Substance, all of which are nominated in multiple key categories and feature in our recently published Best Movies of 2024 list.
In the acting categories, highlights include Sebastian Stan, nominated for Best Actor in both Drama and Musical/Comedy for his roles in A Different Man and The Apprentice; Hugh Grant, recognized for his work in Heretic; and Isabella Rossellini, who made history as the first Italian actor to be nominated for Best Performance by a Female Actor for her role in Conclave.
The Cinematic and Box Office Achievement Award continues to honor films like Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Deadpool & Wolverine, and Twisters. Hans Zimmer's score for Dune: Part Two, despite being disqualified from Oscar consideration, received a Best Score nod at the Golden Globes.
The TV categories are equally impressive, with The Bear leading with five nominations, followed by 2024 favorites such as Shōgun, Slow Horses, Baby Reindeer, and the upcoming Squid Game Season 2.
