At least 24 people were killed and more than 40 injured in a bomb blast at a railway station in Quetta, southwestern Pakistan, on Saturday, according to police and other officials who spoke to Reuters.

Mouzzam Jah Ansari, the inspector general of police for Balochistan, confirmed that 24 people had died as a result of the explosion. "The target was army personnel from the Infantry School," he stated, adding that many of the injured were in critical condition.

Dr. Wasim Baig, a hospital spokesman, informed Reuters that 44 injured individuals had been admitted to the civil hospital.

Senior superintendent of police operations, Muhammad Baloch, indicated that the explosion appeared to be a suicide bomb, and investigations were ongoing to gather more details.

The blast occurred inside the railway station as the Peshawar-bound express train was preparing to depart.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack at Quetta's main railway station, which typically sees high traffic early in the day.

In August, at least 73 people were killed in Balochistan province following militant attacks on police stations, railway lines, and highways. These assaults were the most extensive in years, carried out by militants engaged in a decades-long insurgency aimed at securing the secession of the resource-rich southwestern province, which is home to significant China-led projects such as a port and a gold and copper mine.
