The 28 Days Later franchise is set to receive its third installment in 2025 with 28 Years Later, marking just 18 years since the previous film. The sequel, titled The Bone Temple, will be directed by Nia DaCosta, while Danny Boyle returns to helm the first half. A fifth film is also in development, but Ralph Fiennes, who stars in the upcoming threequel, has revealed that both parts have already been shot.
In an interview with IndieWire, Fiennes discussed his upcoming projects, stating, "It's three films, of which two have been shot." He continued, "Britain is 28 years into this terrible plague of infected people who are violent, rabid humans with a few pockets of uninfected communities." Fiennes described the premise of the Years movies, focusing on a young boy seeking a doctor to save his dying mother. The boy navigates through the beautiful yet perilous northern English terrain, where the infected lurk in forests and hills. He eventually finds a doctor who, despite initial appearances, proves to be a force for good.
The trilogy of sequels was announced in January, with Alex Garland taking on the role of screenwriter for all three films. Boyle confirmed that Garland had completed the scripts just two months later. Alongside Fiennes, the cast includes Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jack O'Connell, Erin Kellyman, and Edvin Ryding. Cillian Murphy is set to reunite with Boyle, reprising his role as Jim from 28 Days Later, over 20 years after the original film.
28 Years Later is scheduled to premiere on June 20, 2025.
