Over 3,000 meticulously handwoven Persian carpets, some dating back to the 17th century, are set to be showcased in Ras Al Khaimah. This remarkable collection, featuring intricate designs and enduring patterns, is valued at approximately Dh1.84 billion ($500 million). “These carpets are living histories. Each knot and motif narrates tales that have been passed down through generations, embodying Persian artistry and culture,” Dr Afshin Ghanbarinia, vice-chairman of Ghanbarinia Heritage Carpets, shared with Khaleej Times.

Following a recent exhibition at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, Ghanbarinia Carpets, a heritage brand established in 1841, is gearing up to open its inaugural branch in Ras Al Khaimah. Ghanbarinia explained, “Our carpets boast intricate motifs, many inspired by the Persian Safavid dynasty (1501-1736). For instance, the Shahabasi flower signifies rebirth, while the central medallion and Eslim symbolize life, balance, and the eternal struggle between good and evil.” He emphasized, “These are not mere decorative items; they are narratives woven into heritage, making them historical artifacts that resonate deeply with the soul.”

Ghanbarinia highlighted that their operations span 31 countries and have been active in the UAE for over 40 years. Their collection encompasses 17th-century masterpieces as well as contemporary designs. “Each carpet is crafted from natural fibers and dyed using plant-based colors, reflecting sustainable and ethical craftsmanship, aligning with the UAE’s commitment to cultural preservation,” he noted.

Walter Hahn, a collector with over 40 years of dedication, expressed his awe for a carpet from the late 1800s. “The intricacy is spellbinding,” he remarked, pointing to the million knots per square meter as testament to the weaver’s skill and devotion. “The colors are vivid yet harmonious, each shade carefully placed to breathe life into the story. Persian carpets are not just objects; they are profound works of art, rich with cultural and spiritual significance in every line and motif,” he emphasized.

Visitors to the new Ras Al Khaimah branch will have the unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the collection and discover the distinctive stories and craftsmanship that make these Persian carpets enduring symbols of artistic heritage.
