The European Film Academy has revealed the nominees for the 37th European Film Awards, set to take place in Lucerne, Switzerland on December 7th. Leading the nominations are Jacques Audiard's Emilia Pérez, a double Cannes winner and France's Oscar entry, and Pedro Almodóvar's The Room Next Door, this year's Golden Lion recipient. Both films are nominated for Best European Film, Director, and Screenplay, along with Best Actress nods for Karla Sofia Gascón in Emilia Pérez and Tilda Swinton in The Room Next Door.

Other prominent contenders include Germany's Oscar entry, The Seed of the Sacred Fig by exiled Iranian director Mohammad Rasoulof, which is nominated for Best Film, Director, and Screenplay. Additional noteworthy nominations include Andrea Arnold's Bird and Coralie Fargeat's The Substance. For the first time, films nominated for Best European Documentary and Best Animated Feature Film are eligible for the Best European Film category, expanding the 2024 list to include titles like Mati Diop's Golden Bear winner Dahomey and Gints Zilbalodis' animated film Flow.

A significant change will occur post this year's awards: the 2024 ceremony will be the last to take place in December. From 2026, the event will move to January, aligning with the broader awards season. The European Film Awards often serve as an indicator for potential EU nominees in the upcoming US awards season. Last year, Anatomy of a Fall won four major prizes, including Best European Film, and later received five Oscar nominations, with director Justine Triet and co-writer Arthur Harari winning the Oscar for Best Screenplay.

Here are the 2024 nominations:

Best European Film
Best European Documentary
Best European Director
Best Actress
Best Actor
Best Screenplay
European Discovery – Prix FIPRESCI
European Young Audience Award

Previously Announced Nominations:

The winners of the 2024 European Film Awards will be announced in Lucerne on December 7th. Italian actress Isabella Rossellini will be honored with the European Achievement in World Cinema Award at the ceremony.
