Exhausted by the flood of unconventional music films? Last week, we were treated to the trailer for Robbie Williams' chimp biopic Better Man, while moviegoers will soon be welcomed by Pharrell's LEGO-inspired take on his own life in the documentary Piece By Piece. However, a more straightforward approach is taken by A Complete Unknown, the upcoming Bob Dylan biopic directed by James Mangold, featuring Timothée Chalamet as the '60s folk legend, strumming the acoustic (and later, notably, electric) guitar. Check out the latest trailer here:
This latest glimpse into the film focuses more on the specific narrative angle Mangold is exploring—not just Dylan's ascent through the folk scene (and his close association with musicians like Joan Baez, portrayed by Monica Barbaro), but also delving into the aftermath and cultural repercussions of his decision to 'go electric', a move that sparked significant controversy. Additionally, we get to hear more of Chalamet's renditions of Dylan's iconic songs, see visuals that mirror legendary imagery (such as the cover of The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan album), and catch more of Edward Norton as Pete Seeger and Elle Fanning as Sylvie Russo (a fictionalized version of Suze Rotolo). If it leans more towards a traditional biopic compared to other upcoming films, Mangold has a proven track record—just look at his Johnny Cash film Walk The Line.
See how A Complete Unknown performs when it rolls into cinemas—like, indeed, a rolling stone—on 17 January.
