A decade ago, Disney and Lucasfilm marked the completion of principal photography on the inaugural film of their new Star Wars trilogy, unveiling its title—The Force Awakens—to the world and igniting a whirlwind of fan theories. Fast forward ten years, five films, numerous Disney+ series, and a plethora of online discussions later, today signifies the dawn of a daring new era for the universe George Lucas created.

According to Deadline, Lucasfilm and Disney have finalized an agreement with Simon Kinberg, a veteran of the X-Men franchise and co-creator of Rebels, to pen and produce a fresh trilogy of Star Wars films. Initially, Deadline speculated that Kinberg's trilogy would span episodes 10 through 12 of the Skywalker Saga. However, industry sources have since refuted this, indicating that these three new films will instead inaugurate a wholly new saga within the Star Wars universe.

Although no filmmakers, actors, plot specifics, or titles have been disclosed for Kinberg's proposed trilogy, the Star Wars franchise is brimming with potential directions. With the High Republic era solidly established in both literature and screen, the New Republic era set to be further explored in the forthcoming Skeleton Crew series, and plans in motion to delve into Daisy Ridley's Rey's future in a New Jedi Order movie, the possibilities are endless.

Kinberg's involvement in crafting a trio of new Star Wars films underscores the rapid expansion of the Lucasfilm and Disney pipeline. As of now, projects from Shawn Levy, Taika Waititi, Donald Glover, James Mangold, and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy are in various stages of development, alongside the already completed Andor Season 2, The Mandalorian & Grogu movie, and the in-progress Ahsoka Season 2. Despite the recent setbacks, such as the cancellation of The Acolyte and Steven Knight's exit from the Rey movie, Star Wars fans have much to anticipate. A decade after the Force awakened, it shows no signs of slumbering—and to that, we say, "Yippee!"
