If The LEGO Movie showed us that EVERYTHING IS AWESOME, it also demonstrated that brick-based blockbusters can be particularly awesome. Director Jared Hess, known for Nacho Libre and Napoleon Dynamite, is banking on this with his upcoming live-action adaptation of Mojang's popular sandbox game, A Minecraft Movie. Starring Jack Black and Jason Momoa, the film aims to capture the essence of the game in a cinematic format. Check out the latest trailer below:
If the initial trailer evoked strong Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle vibes, this latest one amplifies that video-game-reality feel, introducing us to Jack Black's character, Steve, who as a child 'yearned for the mines' and eventually realized his blocky dreams in his man-child years. Fans of the game will appreciate the detailed Redstone contraptions, familiar Minecraft musical cues, and lava-cooked chicken, all rendered with the game's distinctive geometric angles and a Super Mario Bros. Movie-style smoothness that stands out.
Even those unfamiliar with the game will find the upbeat tones of MGMT's 'Time To Pretend', the apparent dude-off between Black and Momoa, and the visual spectacle promising something more substantial than the cynics might anticipate. For those still unsure about Minecraft terms, here's the official synopsis:
"Welcome to the world of Minecraft, where creativity isn’t just helpful for crafting—it’s essential for survival! Four misfits—Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison (Momoa), Henry (Hansen), Natalie (Myers), and Dawn (Brooks)—find themselves transported through a mysterious portal into the Overworld: a cubic wonderland driven by imagination. To return home, they must master this world (and protect it from threats like Piglins and Zombies) while embarking on a magical quest with an unexpected expert crafter, Steve (Black). Together, their adventure will challenge them to be bold and reconnect with their unique creative skills, which are crucial for thriving in the real world."
We'll see if A Minecraft Movie is truly _ore_some or if it ends up being a bit _ghast_ly when Jared Hess' film hits theaters on April 4, 2025.
