Post-partum recovery can span several months, and the healing duration for new mothers varies depending on the mode of delivery. Women who undergo C-sections (caesarean) generally require more time to recuperate compared to those who experience natural childbirth. To assist new mothers in their physical and mental recovery, the Abu Dhabi government has implemented a three-month maternity leave for Emirati women employed in the private sector.

Speaking with Khaleej Times, experts lauded the initiative, stating it is a step in the right direction. By extending maternity leave, Abu Dhabi fosters healthier, happier families by emphasizing the well-being of mothers. The 90-day maternity leave provides an ideal timeframe for mothers to recover before resuming work. Typically, working women in the UAE receive 60 days of maternity leave, with 45 days fully paid and 15 days half-paid.

"A longer recovery period tends to offer greater benefits—it provides more time for physical recovery post-childbirth, which is especially crucial for healing from complications or a caesarean section," explained Dr. Tahira Mahboob, an Obstetrics & Gynaecologist at Medcare Hospital Sharjah. She highlighted the differences in recovery periods based on the type of childbirth: For many women, the 60-day period is adequate for physical recovery from natural delivery, but a caesarean section generally takes longer due to the nature of the surgery.

Women in physically demanding jobs may need an extended recovery period. Consequently, a longer leave allows flexibility to adapt to the new routine and parenting responsibilities without the immediate pressure of returning to work, Dr. Mahboob added.

For many new mothers, the transition to motherhood presents various challenges. Common physical symptoms during post-partum recovery include perineal pain, vaginal bleeding, and fatigue, along with issues such as haemorrhoids and urinary incontinence, particularly after vaginal births. In contrast, those who undergo caesarean sections face extended recovery periods, with potential complications including incision pain and reduced mobility.

Dr. Insha Khan, a Gynaecologist and Obstetrician at Aster Speciality Clinic, noted, "The average recovery time from childbirth is approximately 6-8 weeks, but it can take several months for full recovery, especially if complications arise."

Dr. Mahboob emphasized that both physical recovery and mental well-being are essential. Some women may require additional time to address emotional or psychological challenges. Dr. Summia Zaher, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at Danat El Emarat, highlighted the importance of recognizing emotional changes post-delivery. "The 'baby blues' affect 50% to 75% of mothers, triggered by rapid hormonal shifts. While this is normal, awareness is crucial. If feelings of sadness persist beyond two weeks, it may be time to seek professional help."

Experts widely praised Abu Dhabi’s move. Dr. Zofia Gordon, a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at Medcare Women & Children Hospital, stated, "The extended period reduces stress and enhances mothers' mental health. Additionally, it promotes breastfeeding, which offers numerous health benefits for children." These regulations may also encourage men to utilize their parental leave to actively care for the newborn and family, supporting shared duties and easing the burden on women.

The UAE recognizes the father's role in supporting the family and meeting their needs, granting male employees five days of paternity leave. "Fathers' involvement is equally critical during the post-partum phase. A supportive father can provide emotional support, share baby care responsibilities, and alleviate household burdens, creating a nurturing environment for both mother and child," said Dr. Gordon.

The expert cautioned that inadequate recovery time can have long-term implications, potentially leading to chronic fatigue, unresolved physical issues, and difficulties in bonding with the baby. This underscores the necessity of allowing mothers sufficient time to heal, ultimately enhancing the well-being of the entire family.
