In Abu Dhabi, residents can now enjoy discounts on air tickets, restaurant bills, and shopping vouchers by recycling plastic bottles through AI-driven reverse vending machines (RVMs). To encourage sustainable waste practices among UAE residents, Tadweer Group has installed 25 locally manufactured RVMs in high-traffic areas such as parks, ministry buildings, and airports, incentivizing community participation.

A spokesperson highlighted that through these initiatives, Tadweer aims to divert 80% of Abu Dhabi’s waste from landfills by 2030. Ollie Lawson, the media and communications adviser, emphasized the community's crucial role in achieving these ambitious goals. "RVMs offer a convenient recycling solution for plastic bottles and aluminium cans, along with incentives," Lawson explained during a demonstration at the group's headquarters. "For each returned item, users earn credits that can be redeemed for rewards from various partners," Lawson detailed to Khaleej Times.

Partners like Noon.com, Amazon, Lufthansa, and others offer rewards such as Dh100 discounts on airfare, free desserts, and shopping vouchers. Lawson also mentioned plans to expand the partnership network and reward schemes through the Tadweer Rewards app. The process involves downloading the app, disposing of items in the RVMs, scanning QR codes displayed by AI cameras, and redeeming earned credits for vouchers or discounts. However, these advanced machines only accept plastic bottles and cans, rejecting other items like shampoo bottles.

The app also allows users to track their environmental impact, showing data on saved landfill space, waste diversion, carbon emission reduction, and energy conservation. Ali Al Dhaheri, the managing director and CEO of Tadweer Group, stressed the importance of community involvement in maintaining a clean environment. "We will continue to collaborate with partners to unlock waste value and promote the circular economy, contributing to the UAE’s sustainability goals," Al Dhaheri stated.

Tadweer Group has strategically placed RVMs in locations like shopping malls, hospitals, ministries, and educational institutions. These include Tadweer Group headquarters, Zayed International Airport, and various parks. Lawson noted the importance of analyzing data to improve recycling infrastructure across Abu Dhabi.
