Libraries in Abu Dhabi that have been hosting reading programs for people of determination have experienced a significant rise in participation, with a surge of up to 70 percent. Initiatives such as 'I can read' and 'Readers of determination' by Maktaba, the library management division of the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, have played a crucial role in enhancing creativity, cognitive and communication skills, and emotional well-being.

"Reading enables people of determination to gain knowledge, connect with diverse viewpoints, and experience a sense of accomplishment, which enhances their self-confidence," said Fatema Abdul Rahman Al Tamimi, acting director of the library management department, DCT – Abu Dhabi, in an interview with Khaleej Times. Participation in reading workshops like 'I can read', held at selected Maktaba libraries, has increased by 70 percent this year, with 3,071 participants across different age groups.

"These workshops offer people of determination a platform to interact with literature, improve literacy skills, and share their passion for reading. The positive feedback from parents and the consistent attendance are indicative of the community's interest in these programs." Furthermore, there are storytelling and artistic sessions, interactive workshops, and engaging activities to enrich their reading experiences.

"Our aim is to foster an inclusive environment that cultivates their skills and improves their quality of life," added Al Tamimi. There have been "significant improvements" among regular library visitors who are people of determination, including better literacy skills, enhanced communication confidence, and increased social interaction.

Maktaba provides a broad range of specially crafted books designed to cater to the needs of people of determination, including accessible formats like Braille, audiobooks, easy-to-read texts, and interactive materials. The 'Readers of Determination' support program, conducted every Sunday by a special education expert, underscores the vital role of families in promoting children's success and balancing study and recreational activities.

"It concentrates on improving reading skills among people of determination and those with learning challenges," explained Al Tamimi. The program has led to "substantial improvements" in the reading skills and overall confidence of people of determination, creating a supportive environment for continuous growth.
