Abu Dhabi Police recently released a video capturing two significant traffic accidents, emphasizing the risks associated with distracted driving. The footage, shared by the authority on Friday, serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers on the road.
In the first incident, a four-wheel drive abruptly halts in the middle of the road. The driver exits the vehicle casually, leaving the door open. The car behind manages to slow down and attempts to navigate around the obstruction. However, a third vehicle, unaware of the situation, collides with both the stopped cars at high speed. The initial offending driver appears to have been involved in the collision, while the impact propels the second vehicle into a barrier.
The second incident involves a vehicle crashing into a line of stationary cars due to a traffic jam. This occurred during what seems to be a late evening, despite the hazard lights of the leading vehicle. The resulting pile-up involved at least four cars. The extent of injuries in both accidents remains undisclosed.
Abu Dhabi Police's Traffic and Security Patrols directorate urged motorists not to stop in the middle of the road under any circumstances. Drivers are advised to proceed to the nearest exit for safety. In cases where motorists cannot move their vehicles, they are encouraged to contact the Command and Control Centre at 999 to prevent traffic blockages and accidents.
Dubai Police also emphasized the importance of maintaining a safe distance from other vehicles for everyone's safety. Distracted driving is a serious offense in the UAE, punishable by an Dh800 fine and four black points. Stopping in the middle of the road carries a penalty of a Dh1,000 fine and six black points.
A recent report indicates that most road accidents in the UAE are due to traffic violations, with fatalities increasing by 3% due to motorists' 'misbehavior'. The Ministry of Interior's (MOI) recent 'open data' on road safety statistics for 2023 revealed 352 road fatalities across the country in 2023.
