Following the mesmerizing sight of colossal dust devils whirling across the desert and roads in Kalba, Ras Al Khaimah on Wednesday, residents in Abu Dhabi should brace for rainfall and hail on Thursday. Authorities in Abu Dhabi have issued a warning for varying intensities of rain starting from Thursday, October 24, through Friday, October 25. The weather forecast suggests that different parts of the Capital will witness light to moderate rain, with the possibility of heavy downpours in specific areas.
"On Thursday and Friday, a blend of moist air from the Arabian Sea, a weak low-pressure system, and a relatively cold air mass is expected to induce convective cloud formation in scattered locations, potentially leading to light to heavy rainfall," explained Dr Ahmed Habib, a climate specialist from the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM). According to the seasoned weather expert, "The country will experience northwesterly winds from Saturday." He further elaborated, "This is common during autumn, where weather conditions can transition rapidly from stable to unstable."
Expected weather conditions in Abu Dhabi include light to moderate rainfall, with the potential for heavy showers in some interior areas. Winds are anticipated to be moderate to fresh, accompanied by cloud cover. In Al Ain, light to moderate rain is forecasted in various spots, with some areas possibly experiencing heavy rainfall. Fresh to strong winds are expected, along with a chance of small hailstones. Al Dhafra will see varying intensities of rainfall, with fresh to strong winds and a possibility of small hailstones.
Abu Dhabi Police have urged drivers to adhere to safe driving guidelines and avoid risks during adverse weather conditions. The Directorate of Traffic and Security Patrols highlighted the importance of safe driving practices during rainfall and changing weather. Motorists are advised to maintain specific speed limits when authorities activate speed reduction systems, keep a safe distance from other vehicles, avoid sudden braking, and significantly reduce speed when turning to prevent skidding, especially during rain. If visibility worsens, drivers should safely pull over to the side of the road. Carrying a first aid kit is essential for any unexpected incidents, and residents should ensure they have alternative lighting in case of power outages.
Residents are strongly advised to avoid valleys. With the possibility of heavy rainfall, it is crucial to stay away from valleys and low-lying areas prone to flooding. Many UAE residents often visit valleys to enjoy the cool weather or capture videos of flooded areas and dams, unaware of the potential dangers. To deter this risky behavior, authorities have imposed a fine of Dh1,000 along with six black points for motorists engaging in such activities. Entering flooded valleys, regardless of the danger level, carries severe penalties. Offenders will face a fine of Dh2,000, receive 23 black points, and have their vehicles confiscated for 60 days. Obstructing authorities from managing traffic or hindering ambulance and rescue vehicles during emergencies, disasters, or heavy rainfall—including in flooded valleys—will result in a fine of Dh1,000, four black points, and a 60-day vehicle confiscation.
