After years of speculation, Acura has officially announced plans to develop an electric vehicle reminiscent of the NSX. "We plan to unveil a new sports car in the years 2027 or 2028," revealed Shinji Aoyama, Global Executive Vice President, during a press meeting at Monterey Car Week, speaking to a group that included Motor1. "It might not be branded as an NSX, but it will embody the spirit of the NSX," Aoyama continued. He further mentioned that the vehicle would be built on Honda's forthcoming 0 Series electric platform, which is also slated to support their initial electric sedan, expected in 2026. Rumors of a third-generation NSX have circulated since 2021, sparked by comments from Acura Vice President and Brand Officer Jon Ikeda hinting at a successor. "Our strategy for this new 0 Series model is to prioritize lightness and slimness," Aoyama explained. "This involves creating a platform thinner than those currently in use, even with battery considerations, aiming for a lower-profile vehicle. This approach also allows for a more spacious interior."
An all-electric NSX would need to live up to high expectations. The previous model, discontinued in 2022, boasted a twin-turbo V-6 engine paired with three electric motors, delivering a total of 600 horsepower in its Type S variant. It was a visually striking car with impressive handling capabilities, competing effectively with models like the McLaren 650S, Lamborghini Huracán, and Ferrari 488. While acceleration won't be an issue for the upcoming NSX-inspired EV, the challenges of handling and endurance on the track remain uncertain for even the priciest electric supercars currently available. Additionally, the auditory experience is a concern; while the V-6 engine of the second-gen NSX didn't stir the soul, it certainly sounded more engaging than the typical hum of electric motors. We'll have to wait until 2027 to see what Honda has planned.
