After years of speculation, Acura has officially announced its intention to develop an electric vehicle reminiscent of the NSX. "We plan to unveil a new sports car in the years 2027 or 2028," revealed Shinji Aoyama, Global Executive Vice President, during a discussion with journalists at Monterey Car Week, including Motor1. "It might not bear the NSX name, but it will embody the spirit of the NSX," Aoyama clarified. He further mentioned that this vehicle would be built on Honda's forthcoming 0 Series electric platform, which is also slated to support their initial electric sedan launch in 2026. Rumors of a third-generation NSX have circulated since 2021, when Acura's Vice President and Brand Officer, Jon Ikeda, hinted at its development. Aoyama described the development strategy for the 0 Series as focusing on lightness and thinness, aiming to create a platform slimmer than current models, which would also facilitate a lower-profile vehicle and a more spacious cabin.
An all-electric NSX successor would face significant expectations. The previous model, which ceased production in 2022, boasted a twin-turbo V-6 engine paired with three electric motors, delivering a total of 600 horsepower in its Type S variant. It was a formidable competitor on the track, rivaling models like the McLaren 650S, Lamborghini Huracán, and Ferrari 488. Despite the new electric model's expected prowess in acceleration, questions remain about its handling and endurance on the track, as well as the auditory experience it will offer. Traditional engine sounds, though not stirring in the second-gen NSX, are more engaging than the typical electric motor hum. The full details of Honda's new offering will only be revealed in 2027.
