Earlier this year, Adam Sandler revealed that Netflix will produce and stream Happy Gilmore 2, the sequel to one of his most beloved films. Recently, the film has welcomed AEW wrestler Maxwell Jacob Friedman, also known as MJF, to its cast.
According to Deadline, Friedman's role remains undisclosed, but his natural persona as a heel—or bad guy—in the wrestling ring makes him a standout since AEW's inception in 2019. MJF, a former AEW World champion, made his acting debut in A24's The Iron Claw, a drama centered around the renowned Von Erich wrestling family. Additionally, Friedman is set to appear in the forthcoming films The Floaters and Stranglehold.
The original Happy Gilmore starred Sandler as a hockey player who discovers an innate talent for golf. However, his uncontrollable temper and putting struggles nearly sabotaged his golf career. Julie Bowen portrayed Happy's love interest, Virginia Venit, while Christopher McDonald played his rival, Shooter McGavin. Both Bowen and McDonald will reprise their roles in the sequel. Travis Kelce and Margaret Qualley will make cameo appearances, and Bad Bunny is also slated for an unspecified role in the film.
Murder Mystery director Kyle Newacheck is collaborating again with Sandler for the sequel, which is co-written by the actor and Tim Herlihy. Netflix has yet to announce a release date for Happy Gilmore 2.
