According to a senior executive at PlayStation, the increasing use of artificial intelligence in game development has the potential to 'revolutionize' the gaming industry, but only when used as a tool to support human creativity.

'Striking the right balance between leveraging AI and preserving the human touch will be crucial,' Hermen Hulst told the BBC. He predicts that the gaming sector will face a 'dual demand,' with one part seeking AI-driven 'innovative experiences' and the other preferring 'handcrafted, thoughtful content.'

Concerns among industry developers about AI potentially displacing human jobs are growing. This concern is one of the reasons behind the ongoing strike by video game voice actors and calls for labor organization by some unions.

Christoph Hartmann of Amazon believes that AI could replace 'boring' aspects of video game jobs, such as localization. However, he and others argue that the rise of AI will create enough new jobs to compensate for any potential losses. EA's Andrew Wilson previously noted that past revolutions, like agriculture and industry, initially reduced jobs but ultimately created many more, suggesting a similar trajectory for the AI revolution.

The video game industry faced another challenging year in 2024, with thousands of layoffs, game cancellations, and studio closures. Several companies, including Microsoft, EA, Amazon, and PlayStation, have cut jobs in the past year, although it remains unclear whether these cuts were related to AI advancements.
