The entire Ajman taxi fleet has transitioned to being 100 per cent environmentally friendly. Comprising 2,274 eco-friendly taxis, the fleet has successfully completed over 8.5 million trips. These vehicles include a diverse range of gas-powered, electric, and hybrid models, all designed to minimize fuel consumption and reduce carbon emissions.
This significant achievement by the transport authority is part of its ongoing commitment to sustainability and environmental conservation. According to Omar Mohammed Lootah, Director General of the transport authority in Ajman, the continuous efforts and meticulously planned strategies enabled the authority to meet this goal ahead of schedule. He further noted that the authority provided comprehensive support to taxi companies, encouraging their participation in this initiative.
The authority was a pioneer in adopting modern, environmentally friendly technologies when hybrid vehicles were introduced to the taxi market in 2015 in the emirate. Taxi companies were actively supported and encouraged to adopt these eco-friendly vehicles. In 2022, the transport authority further enhanced the taxi fleet with electric vehicles, which have demonstrated their effectiveness in the transportation market.
Ajman's focus on reducing carbon emissions aligns with the UAE's broader commitment to sustainability. In recent years, there has been an increasing emphasis on environmentally friendly vehicles as part of the national transport strategy. This approach underscores the UAE's holistic vision to enhance the quality of life while minimizing environmental impact, reflecting the wise leadership's dedication to building a sustainable society for future generations.
Lootah emphasized that the shift towards electric and self-driving vehicles is a crucial step towards establishing regional leadership in the transportation sector, positioning Ajman as a model for emulation at the regional level.
