Meet Al Pacino's 'little friend.' The 84-year-old Oscar winner is delving into a distressing childhood memory in his new memoir, 'Sonny Boy.'

Pacino recounts an injury at the age of 10 that involved his penis, calling it 'one of the most embarrassing experiences of my life.' He writes in the book's first chapter, 'I seemed to cheat death on a regular basis. I was like a cat with many more than nine lives. I had more mishaps and accidents than I can count.'

The incident that makes Pacino 'squeamish to tell it now' involved walking on a thin, iron fence during a rainy morning. He slipped and fell, with the iron bar striking him directly between his legs. In excruciating pain, he was found groaning in the street by an older man who carried him to his aunt's apartment.

At home, Pacino lay on the bed with his pants down, as his mother, aunt, and grandmother examined his injury in a semi-panic. He recalls thinking, 'God, please take me now,' as they whispered to each other during the inspection.

Despite the trauma, his penis 'remained attached.' Pacino is still haunted by the thought of it. The memoir also covers other childhood stories, including times with his divorced parents and mischievous activities like stealing food and jumping subway turnstiles.

Earlier this month, Pacino shared another near-death experience during his battle with COVID-19. He described how his heart stopped, and paramedics had to revive him. Despite these life-altering experiences, Pacino finds solace in his children and his extensive body of work.
