Al Roker made a major blunder on Thursday morning when he accidentally spilled a significant spoiler about the upcoming 'Wicked' movie, which features Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo. During an early morning segment of the 2024 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, Roker was hosting alongside Idina Menzel, 53, when he inadvertently revealed Menzel's secret cameo in the film. 'You had a cameo in ‘Wicked,’ in the movie,' Roker said. Menzel confirmed her appearance in 'Wicked: Part One,' the film adaptation of the musical, but playfully scolded Roker for breaking the surprise. 'You’re not supposed to tell anyone about the cameo! Cat’s out of the bag,' Menzel chided. 'Cat’s out of the bag!' Roker echoed, defending his slip by noting that 'everyone’s been sharing everything online.'
Menzel herself has posted several behind-the-scenes photos on social media, showing her in costume on set, but the cameo remained a secret for many until Roker’s reveal. In the movie, Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth, 56, play members of a theater troupe in the Emerald City that performs 'One Short Day,' recounting the Wizard’s legendary arrival in Oz. The duo’s performance is a highlight as Erivo’s Elphaba and Grande’s Glinda arrive in the magical city for an audience with the Wizard (Jeff Goldblum). 'It’s a source of great pride to be part of the genesis and the legacy that has become ‘Wicked'. I will hold dear forever,' Menzel expressed. She originated the role of Elphaba on Broadway alongside Chenoweth as Glinda in 2003 when the musical first debuted.
'And the movie has been very loving and respectful of our show while bringing it to new heights,' Menzel told Roker. 'Wicked: Part One' grossed an impressive $114 million at the domestic box office during its opening weekend. Menzel noted that her appearance on the 'Today' show with Roker—her sixth time at the parade—was a 'full circle' moment, as she performed in the parade as Elphaba when the show first hit the stage nearly 20 years ago. Now a Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade veteran, Menzel is set to perform a song from her current show, 'Redwood,' titled 'Great Escape.'
