American model Alex Consani continues to break new ground. She has already made waves as the youngest signed transgender model, securing a contract with IMG Models, and made history in 2023 by becoming the first trans model to be named a Victoria's Secret Angel. Last October, both Consani and Valentina Sampaio etched their names in history by walking the runway at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, marking the first time trans models graced the event.

Now, Consani has added another milestone to her impressive resume by winning the 2024 Model of the Year award at the British Fashion Council's Fashion Awards. This makes her the first transgender woman not only to be nominated but also to clinch the prestigious title. The ceremony, held at the Royal Albert Hall in London, recognized "the global impact of a model who, over the past 12 months, has dominated the industry, with an influence that transcends the catwalk." Consani, at just 21 years old, has certainly left an indelible mark, having secured campaigns and runway shows with top brands like Victoria's Secret, Chanel, Stella McCartney, Burberry, and Jacquemus, while also broadening perspectives on the modeling profession.

Her influence extends beyond the runway, thanks in part to her TikTok account @captincroook, which boasts over four million subscribers. The account features a mix of NSFW content and candid behind-the-scenes glimpses into her life as one of the most sought-after models in the world. Additionally, she starred in Charli XCX's '360' music video, which was part of the album ‘Brat’—one of the standout albums of the year and a catalyst for a significant cultural movement.

In her acceptance speech, Consani acknowledged her groundbreaking achievement, saying, "I'm the first trans woman to win this award!" She also paid tribute to those who paved the way for her, specifically Black trans women like Dominique Jackson, Connie Fleming, Aaron Rose Phillips, and many others who fought for the space she now occupies. She also thanked her parents for their unwavering support and urged other parents of trans children to do the same.

"Now, more than ever, it’s crucial to have a conversation about how to truly support and uplift one another within this industry, especially those who have been made to feel insignificant," she added. "Change is not just possible—it's necessary," she concluded.

Consani’s historic win has sparked a mix of reactions online, with transphobes venting their anger. While we won’t give these reactions the spotlight, it’s clear that her victory has been met with a torrent of bile and hatred. Amidst the noise, all that remains is to offer heartfelt congratulations, hoping that this historic moment in fashion will inspire a shift in attitudes and mindsets.
