Legacy sci-fi franchise fans — gather 'round! We've got updates on Alien, Predator, and even a hint of Alien Vs. Predator (sort of...). Earlier today, THR published a comprehensive new interview with 20th Century Studios' head honcho, Steve Asbell, to celebrate the Disney-owned studio's successful summer. The conversation was packed with exciting teasers for upcoming projects (a Miss Marple movie! Speed 3! The much-anticipated Master And Commander prequel!), but Asbell's insights on the future of the studio's Xenomorphian and Yautjan plans were particularly noteworthy.
First, Asbell disclosed that Fede Alvarez is already brainstorming ideas for an Alien: Romulus sequel, with the hope that stars David Jonsson and Cailee Spaeny will return. "We haven’t finalized our deal with Fede [Alvarez], but we will, and he has an idea we're working on," Asbell shared. "The two survivors, Rain and Andy [...] were standout characters in the film. So, I always wonder, 'Where do people want to see them go next?' We know there will be aliens. We know there will be thrilling horror scenes. But I really connected with both characters, and I want to see where their story leads."
On the Predator front, Asbell revealed that Dan Trachtenberg, director of Prey, has just finished shooting his Elle Fanning-starring Badlands in New Zealand ("It's absolutely wild"). Interestingly, Trachtenberg has also quietly developed another secret Predator film. "There’s a secret Predator movie that will release before the theatrical one, but I can't reveal anything about it yet," teased Asbell. While he didn't elaborate on the other Yautja film, his mention of Badlands being "a live-action Predator" film might suggest an animated interquel is in the works. We'll have to wait and see...
Lastly, we mentioned some Alien Vs. Predator news. Asbell believes a movie featuring both an alien and a predator will likely happen, but not in the style of the original AVP or Requiem. "It wouldn’t be in the way you think," Asbell explains. "That’s the thing. It won't just be called Alien vs. Predator or anything like the original movies. If we do this, it will organically evolve from these two franchises, with characters we love, and those characters will come together…perhaps." Probably... perhaps... Mr. Asbell, you've piqued our curiosity — and anything new in the Alien and Predator realms will always capture our interest. Stay tuned!
