Rúben Amorim has stated that his performance will be evaluated based on Manchester United's final league position, following their 4-0 victory over Everton on Sunday. This win propelled United to 19 points, just four points behind Brighton, who currently hold the last Champions League spot. Marcus Rashford and Joshua Zirkzee each scored two goals, securing a triumphant first home league match for the Portuguese manager. When questioned about the feasibility of Champions League qualification, Amorim responded, “I will be judged on the place that we finished. If I said no, you would argue that I am unfit to manage Manchester United.” He emphasized the importance of honesty with the fans, urging focus on performance rather than results, and looking ahead to the next game. Amorim highlighted the team's performance against Bodø/Glimt, where they narrowly lost 3-2, and today's 4-0 win, noting that Everton also deserved more. He reiterated the need to concentrate on performance.
On Friday, Amorim had mentioned that Rashford must genuinely desire improvement. After the Everton match, he acknowledged Rashford's potential, stating, “He can do so much. He needs to keep improving, as he has the ability and has already shown it. But he, like the others, can play much better. Today was a good performance, and tomorrow he must recover and start preparing for Arsenal.” Zirkzee's performance was particularly noteworthy, given his previous struggles with form. Amorim explained, “I need all players to handle the demands of the games, and he is one of them. I try to assist my players, placing them in positions that suit their strengths.” Amorim also clarified his decision to start Zirkzee over Rasmus Højlund, who scored twice against Bodø/Glimt. “It would have been challenging for Rasmus to face Everton's two center-backs, so we aimed to exploit a position they are less comfortable with,” he said. “Josh did an excellent job, scoring two goals, which boosts confidence, and more importantly, his performance and tenacity in every situation. It was a good day for him and our team.”
