Filmmaker Ang Lee will receive the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award at the 77th Annual Directors Guild of America (DGA) Awards on February 8, 2025. Lee, the Academy Award-winning director of films like Brokeback Mountain and Life of Pi, will be the 37th filmmaker to be honored with this distinguished award. The announcement was made through the official social media channels of the DGA.

The award, given at the discretion of current and past DGA presidents, recognizes exceptional contributions to cinema. Lesli Linka Glatter, the current DGA president, praised Lee as "truly a master filmmaker," noting his diverse and impressive body of work. She highlighted Lee's ability to boldly explore various genres, from period dramas and comedies to superhero films and martial arts epics. Glatter also emphasized Lee's consistent pursuit of cinematic excellence, never repeating himself and always challenging the boundaries of filmmaking.

Glatter further commended Lee's talent for creating complex characters and unforgettable stories. "Through his films, Ang invites his audiences to explore complex characters that linger in your heart and mind long after the screen has gone dark," she said. Lee's work has consistently been recognized by critics, festivals, and audiences for its brilliant storytelling and technological innovations.

Lee's career began in the early 1990s with films such as The Wedding Banquet, but he gained global recognition with Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Brokeback Mountain, and Life of Pi. The latter earned him an Academy Award for Best Director. A member of the DGA since 1996, Lee has received multiple nominations and awards from the guild, including winning the DGA Award for Feature Film in 2000 for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and in 2005 for Brokeback Mountain.

In 2018, the DGA also honored Lee with a special recognition for his contributions to American culture through his work in film and television. Expressing his gratitude, Lee said, "I am honored to be recognized in such an incredible way by my beloved guild. To be given the DGA lifetime achievement award is a momentous achievement for me personally and an opportunity to reflect on what my work has meant to this amazing community of my fellow filmmakers."

The DGA Lifetime Achievement Award, first presented to Cecil B. DeMille in 1953, has been awarded to legendary directors such as Alfred Hitchcock, Orson Welles, Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, Ridley Scott, and most recently, Spike Lee.
