An Arab diplomatic delegation, led by the UAE's representative, convened with high-ranking UN officials to address the escalating crisis in Lebanon and the intensifying military conflict on the ground. The primary focus was on the urgent need for a humanitarian response.
Jamal Al Musharakh, the permanent representative of the UAE to the UN office, engaged in discussions with Filippo Grandi, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, emphasizing the necessity for immediate action as numerous civilians evacuate Beirut due to the military escalation. They also deliberated on the increasing influx of refugees as the conflict persists.
Earlier this week, Israel initiated 'ground raids' in southern Lebanon, following days of intense bombardment in areas dominated by Hezbollah. According to Lebanon's health ministry, the bombing has resulted in over 1,000 fatalities and compelled hundreds of thousands to abandon their homes. Many have spent nights on the streets.
In response to the tensions, the Arab group met with Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the director-general of the World Health Organisation, highlighting the imperative to swiftly address the needs of the Lebanese people and enhance humanitarian aid and medical supplies.
Al Mashrakh and other Arab ambassadors also conversed with Mirjana Spoljaric Egger, the president of the International Committee of the Red Cross, underscoring the importance of safeguarding civilians during this challenging period.
