The dream of UAE residents and visitors to fly in an air taxi is nearing reality as Archer Aviation's Midnight aircraft, set to operate in Abu Dhabi and Dubai by 2025, has successfully transitioned to a speed exceeding 360 kilometers per hour. This challenging eVTOl maneuver involves vertical takeoff akin to a helicopter, forward acceleration, and a shift from thrust-borne to wing-borne flight with tilt propellers, followed by vertical landing. This transition is crucial for Midnight and similar aircraft to carry commercially viable passenger loads. Currently in testing in the US, Midnight will see Archer Aviation establish manufacturing facilities in the UAE in partnership with the Abu Dhabi Investment Office (Adio), along with an international headquarters in the Emirate. Dr. Geoff Bower, Archer's chief engineer, highlighted the significance of this engineering milestone, noting Midnight's potential as one of the largest eVTOL aircraft capable of supporting a successful air taxi service. Planned piloted test flights are set for 2024, with Midnight designed to reduce travel times between the emirates significantly and operate at competitive prices. Archer has also secured necessary certifications from the US Federal Aviation Authority (FAA), positioning Midnight for its final certification phase with piloted flight testing scheduled later this year.
