Liverpool manager Arne Slot remains grounded despite his team leading the Premier League standings following their win against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday, marking their fourth consecutive victory across all competitions in under two weeks.
With 15 points from six league matches, Liverpool is ahead of reigning champions Manchester City and last season's runners-up Arsenal by one point. Saturday's triumph is part of a series of strong performances by Liverpool, including a 3-1 victory over AC Milan in the Champions League, a 3-0 win against Bournemouth in the league, and a 5-1 thrashing of West Ham United in the League Cup third round.
However, Dutch coach Slot is cautious about labeling Liverpool as definite title contenders. "I always aim to be realistic, and Juergen's work has been remarkable, everyone knows that," Slot said, referring to former manager Juergen Klopp, who left after last season. "Two years ago, they last played in the Champions League and finished fifth. Now, we must demonstrate our ability to compete in both the Champions League and the Premier League." Slot believes it's too early to draw conclusions after just six games, suggesting that after 19 games, a clearer picture will emerge.
Ibrahima Konate scored his maiden Premier League goal at Molineux, while Mohamed Salah converted a penalty. Wolves managed to equalize due to some sloppy defending from Konate. The French center-back playfully suggested during post-game interviews that he should have been named man of the match instead of Dutch midfielder Ryan Gravenberch, who received the award. However, Slot was not amused. "Konate? Perhaps he forgot the moment we conceded a goal," Slot remarked. "That was the reason we conceded as he wasn't there and it was avoidable." Slot acknowledged that conceding in that manner allowed Wolves back into the game, but Liverpool quickly regained the lead to make it 2-1, making the match challenging until the final whistle.
Liverpool is set to host Bologna in a Champions League match on Wednesday.
