Arsenal has the potential to end their 21-year drought for a Premier League title this season, according to Bukayo Saka, who spoke after his team's 2-0 victory over Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League. Arsenal finished as runners-up in the 2022-23 season and pushed the Premier League title race to the final day last season before finishing second again, this time behind Manchester City. This season, the north London club is in contention, currently sitting in third place, and their impressive win against PSG further solidified their title aspirations, with goals from Kai Havertz and Saka.
“I don’t want to place too much pressure on us, but I do believe that this could be the year [we win the title],” Saka told CBS Sports. “We’ve been close in the last two years and we’re getting even closer, so hopefully, this will be our year.” Saka, who has become a pivotal player for Arsenal and was their top scorer in the Premier League last season, mentioned that the near misses in previous years have fueled his desire for success.
“In previous years, I’ve often come in second place,” the 23-year-old told Amazon Prime. “It’s that drive within me to win this season, and of course, I have a lot of confidence in myself. These two factors help. We believe in ourselves, we believe we are a top team. We demonstrated that tonight. I did tell the team that we need to make a statement when big teams come to the Emirates.” Arsenal will host 19th-placed Southampton on Saturday.
