Javelin thrower Arshad Nadeem's historic gold medal win at the 2024 Paris Olympics marked Pakistan's first-ever Olympic gold, becoming a significant moment not only for sports in South Asia but also for national pride among Pakistanis in the UAE. The 27-year-old's victory deeply resonated with the spirit of Pakistan Independence Day celebrations in the UAE, highlighting the nation's global potential. This symbolic victory coincided with Independence Day celebrations ahead of August 14, held at the World Trade Centre in Dubai on Sunday, where around 10,000 people enjoyed a 12-hour cultural and musical extravaganza.
Different groups, including the Pakistani Riders Group (PRG) led by Mirza Khud, extended heartfelt congratulations to Nadeem. Khud, who attended the event with 52 bikers, expressed immense pride in Nadeem's achievement, stating, "Winning a gold medal at the Olympics is a historic accomplishment that enhances our nation's standing. It feels like a breath of fresh air for every Pakistani." The Bikers group, which explores locations within the UAE and neighboring countries like Oman, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Qatar, plans to resume their pan-GCC rides as the weather improves.
The event, organized by the "Emirates Loves Pakistan" page in collaboration with the Pakistan Association Dubai, Dubai Police, and Dubai World Trade Centre, featured vibrant cultural performances, musical shows, and traditional activities. Mudassar Nasir Abbassi, a UAE expat, attended with a group of 12, including family and friends, highlighting the strong connections between the UAE and Pakistan. Eleven-year-old Rida Irfan wore traditional attire inspired by Pashtun culture, emphasizing the importance of cultural heritage.
The event was attended by Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence, along with diplomats and prominent figures from the Pakistani community. Hussain Muhammad, Consul General of Islamic Republic of Pakistan to UAE, addressed the attendees, emphasizing the resilience and determination of the Pakistani people and the lasting bond between UAE and Pakistan. He noted the enduring friendship and deep-rooted ties between the two countries, rooted in common social values, traditions, and faith.
