Assassin's Creed Shadows is set to transport players to feudal Japan when it launches early next year. As anticipated, swords and knives will play a central role in the arsenal of Shadows' two protagonists, Naoe and Yasuke. However, both characters will not rely solely on their primary weapons to inflict damage. Ubisoft has provided an extensive overview of the combat system in Assassin's Creed Shadows, detailing the tools that the lead characters will employ in battle.

According to Ubisoft, the choice of weapons and characters "significantly changes combat" in this game. Naoe, the first character, is a shinobi/ninja, equipped with a katana, a kusarigama (a ball-and-chain weapon), and a tanto dagger that enables swift strikes and double assassinations. Yasuke, the samurai, boasts a more extensive arsenal, including a long katana, a naginata (a staff with a blade), a kanabo (a spiked war club), a yumi bow, and a teppo flint rifle. Unlike Naoe, Yasuke can switch weapons mid-combo for powerful attacks.

Yasuke's weapons and strength make him ideal for direct confrontations, while Naoe's speed and stealth are perfect for subtle assassinations or stealth missions. Both characters have light and heavy attacks, along with the ability to charge their offensive moves, referred to as posture attacks. Defense is also crucial, as certain techniques can weaken an enemy's guard, leaving them open to counterattacks.

Ubisoft has also outlined some of the most common enemies in the game. Each enemy has unique strengths and weaknesses, with some being easier to defeat than others. The Samurai Daisho are among the most formidable foes, but the rewards for defeating them are substantial.

Assassin's Creed Shadows was delayed to February 14, 2025, earlier this fall. The game will introduce a new narrative direction set in modern times. Recently, details about the game's battle pass leaked online, and Ubisoft confirmed that the rewards in the Animus Hub are free.
