Player choices have always been a significant aspect of the Assassin's Creed series, and this remains true in Assassin's Creed Shadows. For those fans who prefer not to stress over selecting branching dialogue options or deciding who to romance, Ubisoft is introducing a new Canon Mode in Shadows. This mode allows players to enjoy the story without making any choices themselves.

Shadows director Jonathan Dumont shared this new feature during a Reddit Q&A session with other developers. "Choices are more prominent when recruiting allies and engaging in romantic relationships with certain characters," Dumont explained. "Given the divided opinions among fans regarding branching dialogues, we've included Canon Mode, which lets you experience the game with predetermined choices, offering a choice-free gameplay experience. We hope this enhances enjoyment for everyone."

Dumont also mentioned that Shadows is similar in scale to Assassin's Creed Origins. Associate Narrative Director Brooke Davies added that outside of Canon Mode, the main characters, Naoe and Yasuke, can choose their romantic partners, offering both short and long-term romance options. Davies noted, "The story of Shadows reaches a single, canonical ending. However, there are multiple unique paths leading to this conclusion, each determining who accompanies you along the way."

The developers confirmed that Shadows will introduce a fresh direction for the modern-day storyline. Dumont stated that Shadows "will differ from previous entries but is connected to our modern-day lore, evolving over time through the Animus Hub and future titles." He also revealed that Hattori Hanzō from Assassin's Creed: Memories will make an appearance in Shadows.

Davies further explained that Naoe and Yasuke do not start as allies. "Their paths eventually converge as they unite around a common cause," she said. "However, this journey is not always smooth, and their distinct backgrounds and perspectives sometimes clash. Players will witness and even assist in resolving these conflicts through meaningful choices."

Ubisoft recently provided a detailed overview of combat mechanics in Shadows. Information about the game's battle pass has surfaced online, and Ubisoft has confirmed that the Animus Hub rewards are free. Assassin's Creed Shadows is set to release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on February 14, 2025.
