Aston Villa are reportedly evaluating the future of their women’s first-team manager, Robert de Pauw, according to the Guardian.
After suffering a 4-0 loss against Arsenal in the Women’s Super League on Sunday, the club finds itself in ninth place, just one point above the relegation zone. De Pauw has managed only one win in his first nine league matches since joining the English football scene.
Multiple sources indicate that senior staff at Aston Villa discussed De Pauw’s position on Tuesday. It remains uncertain whether he will continue to lead the team for their upcoming League Cup Group E match at home against Championship side Charlton Athletic. Villa is currently second in the group, trailing only Tottenham, and still has a solid chance of advancing to the quarter-finals before the group stage concludes on Wednesday.
It is also reported that De Pauw did not attend the club’s regular training session on Tuesday. The Guardian has reached out to Aston Villa for comment.
De Pauw, 43, took charge of Villa in June, signing a three-year contract with an option for an additional year. Before joining Villa, he managed the German women’s team Bayer Leverkusen, finishing sixth in the Frauen Bundesliga last season, following a fifth-place finish in the previous campaign.
Prior to his stint in Germany, he served as the manager of FC Twente in the Netherlands, where he achieved a domestic double in 2022. He also had experience coaching within the Dutch national youth system.
De Pauw replaced Carla Ward, who managed Aston Villa for three years, guiding the team to ninth, fifth, and seventh-place finishes in those respective seasons.
