Aston Villa have announced that their women’s team manager, Robert de Pauw, has departed the club with immediate effect. The news broke just hours before their Women’s League Cup group match against Charlton on Wednesday. The decision comes as Villa currently sit just one point above the Women’s Super League relegation zone.

The Guardian reported on Tuesday that the club was evaluating the Dutchman’s position. In the early hours of Wednesday, de Pauw shared a cryptic message on LinkedIn. While his post did not directly mention Aston Villa, he spoke about embracing “difficult decisions” rather than focusing on “popularity contests.” He also included a link to an article detailing his previous departure from Bayer Leverkusen.

Following Sunday’s 4-0 loss to Arsenal, Villa are now in ninth place. Under de Pauw’s leadership, the team secured only one victory in nine league matches. In a club statement, Aston Villa expressed their gratitude, saying: “We would like to thank Robert for his dedication during his tenure and wish him the best for the future. Shaun Goater will take temporary charge until a new manager is appointed, with support from the broader coaching staff.”
