Atletico Madrid has announced the acquisition of Argentine forward Julian Alvarez from Manchester City on a six-year deal, according to a statement from the LaLiga club on Monday. Neither club has revealed the financial specifics of the transfer, but British media outlets suggest the agreement is valued at approximately 75 million euros ($82 million), with an additional 20 million euros contingent on performance milestones.
Alvarez expressed his gratitude and farewell to Manchester City on Instagram, stating, "Today, I bid farewell to this incredible club filled with mixed emotions. It was a remarkable two years during which I matured both as a player and as an individual." He continued, "I will forever cherish my time as part of this family, and Manchester City will always hold a special place in my heart. I extend my best wishes for the club's future and will remain a supporter from afar."
The 24-year-old's departure sets a new record for Manchester City in terms of sale price, surpassing the 50 million pounds paid by Chelsea for winger Raheem Sterling in 2022. Alvarez, who joined City from River Plate in 2022 for 14 million pounds, has netted 36 goals in 103 matches under manager Pep Guardiola. He has secured two Premier League titles, one Champions League, FA Cup, Super Cup, and Club World Cup, in addition to winning the 2022 World Cup with Argentina and the Copa America earlier this year.
Atletico manager Diego Simeone has been seeking a center forward following Alvaro Morata's transfer to AC Milan last month.
