The automotive world is buzzing with excitement as automakers introduce new vehicles and technologies. This week, the Volkswagen Auto Group, parent to Audi and Porsche, takes center stage with several significant announcements.
The all-new Audi Q6 e-tron made its Middle East debut at five iconic locations earlier this month. The electric SUV was showcased against the backdrop of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, the Museum of Islamic Art Park in Doha, Dubai’s Museum of the Future, the House of Wisdom in Sharjah, and the Al Mouj complex in Muscat. Recently, a select group of enthusiasts, including us, had the privilege of experiencing the Q6 e-tron firsthand in the scenic landscapes of Khorfakkan.
At the heart of the Q6 e-tron is Audi’s Premium Platform Electric (PPE), offering a range of up to 625km. Its 800-volt charging system supports rapid DC charging, replenishing 255 km in just 10 minutes and charging from 10 percent to 80 percent in 21 minutes. Powered by dual motors, the Q6 e-tron delivers 285 kW, accelerating from 0-100 km/h in 5.9 seconds, while the SQ6 e-tron achieves the same in 4.3 seconds with its 360 kW output. Both models come equipped with adaptive air suspension for superior handling.
Audi’s new design language debuts with the Q6 e-tron, featuring active digital light signatures, second-gen OLED rear lights, and Advanced Digital Matrix LED headlights. Inside, the Q6 e-tron boasts a sophisticated cabin with three screens: an 11.9-inch Audi Virtual Cockpit Plus, a 14.5-inch central MMI display, and a 10.9-inch MMI display for the passenger. The rear seats can be folded in a 40:20:40 split, expanding the luggage capacity from 526 to 1,529 litres. Additionally, a secondary luggage compartment under the bonnet offers 64 litres of storage.
The Q6 e-tron is now available for pre-order, with prices starting at Dh290,000 and ranging up to Dh343,000 for the SQ6 e-tron. It is set to arrive in Middle Eastern showrooms in Q1 2025, with more variants like the Sportback to follow.
In another electrifying move, Porsche unveiled the all-electric Macan and facelifted Taycan models on October 10 at the ADNEC Marina Hall in Abu Dhabi. The electric Macan features a robust body design with a coupe-like silhouette, delivering up to 639 PS in Turbo trim and achieving 0-100 km/h in 3.3 seconds. The Macan 4 offers an impressive 612km range with 408 PS. Thanks to the PPE, the Macan supports 270 kW fast-charging, allowing a 10 percent to 80 percent charge in just 21 minutes.
The revamped Taycan models, including the Taycan, Taycan 4S, and Taycan Turbo, feature updated front and rear designs, emphasizing a wider stance. The Turbo S model boasts a range of up to 678 km, accelerating from 0-100 km/h in 2.4 seconds. With Porsche’s 800-Volt charging system, a 10 percent to 80 percent charge is achieved in 18 minutes using a 320 kW DC station.
For eco-conscious travelers, the Blusmart app offers a sustainable ride-hailing service in the UAE, featuring an all-electric fleet of Audi e-tron 55 vehicles. The app facilitates easy bookings and payments, with a base fare of Dh25 and an additional Dh25 airport parking charge for pick-ups. Users can opt for single rides or hourly bookings, with complimentary water bottles and charging cables provided. The service also offers a ‘BluSmart for Business’ option for corporate needs.
My recent ride from Taj Exotica Resort & Spa in The Palm to Jaddaf cost Dh125, with the app highlighting the 2.47kg of CO2 saved. While the service maintains high cleanliness and comfort levels, the rear cabin’s spaciousness is notable, though the seat cushions could be more cushioned.
