Are you a fan of Huey Lewis And The News? It seems Austin Butler has recently joined the club. After portraying the King of Rock'n'Roll in Baz Luhrmann's 'Elvis,' the menacing Feyd-Rautha Harkkonen in Denis Villeneuve's 'Dune: Part Two,' and the heroic Major Gale 'Buck' Cleven in Steven Spielberg's 'Masters Of The Air,' Butler is now set to take on another iconic role: Patrick Bateman.
According to Variety, the Oscar-nominated actor has secured the lead in Luca Guadagnino's upcoming adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis' 'American Psycho.' This news comes after speculation that Australian actor Jacob Elordi might land the part. However, it's now confirmed that Butler will step into the shoes of Bateman, following Christian Bale's legendary performance in Mary Harron's 2000 film.
It's crucial to note that Guadagnino's version won't be a remake of Harron's movie but rather a fresh take on the novel, with a script penned by 'Contagion' writer Scott Z. Burns. While details are scarce, it's safe to assume that Butler's Bateman will still be an investment banker with a penchant for serial killing. Given Guadagnino's track record, the psychosexual elements of Ellis' novel might be more pronounced than in Harron's film.
Before 'American Psycho,' Guadagnino expressed a desire to move away from his recent focus on desire-themed films. With projects like the recently completed Julia Roberts thriller 'After The Hunt' and the rumored 'Sgt. Rock' movie for DC, it appears Guadagnino is fulfilling that goal. With Butler as his new muse, the director seems poised to explore new cinematic territories.
As we await more details on 'American Psycho,' we'll leave you with this: we need to return some videotapes...
