Australia got off to a strong start in their ICC Women’s T20 World Cup campaign with a 33-run win over England. Beth Mooney’s half-century played a crucial role as Australia secured a victory in Dubai, setting the stage for their bid to claim a fourth consecutive title in the tournament.

Opting to bat first, Australia posted a total of 162-6 from their 20 overs, with Beth Mooney providing a solid foundation. She reached her half-century in just 30 balls, despite Alyssa Healy (12) and Ellyse Perry (7) failing to make significant contributions. A 50-run partnership with Ashleigh Gardner (21) was disrupted by Charlie Dean (1-16), but Tahlia McGrath (31) and Georgia Wareham (18no) accelerated the scoring to set a challenging target.

Lauren Bell was England’s standout bowler, taking 2-29, including the early dismissal of Healy. In response, England showed determination in their chase, with Maia Bouchier hitting 17 before being caught behind off Darcie Brown. Alice Capsey then took charge, scoring 40 from 34 balls, but her efforts were not supported by her teammates, with wickets falling regularly. McGrath was instrumental in Australia’s victory, taking three wickets, including the crucial dismissal of Nat Sciver-Brunt, to finish with figures of 3-18.

The tournament kicks off on Thursday with Scotland facing Bangladesh. Australia’s first match is against Sri Lanka in Sharjah on 5 October.
