Paramount Game Studios and Saber Interactive have officially announced the development of a 'AAA' game set in the universe of Avatar: The Last Airbender. The game, currently in production, is being co-produced with Avatar Studios, a division established by the show's original creators, Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, in 2021 to expand the IP across various media.

The companies involved are touting this game as 'the biggest video game in franchise history,' according to IGN. Although details are currently scarce, it has been confirmed that the game will feature an 'all-new, never-before-seen Avatar' and is set thousands of years before the events of the Avatar Legends universe. It's important to note that this game is not related to James Cameron's blockbuster movie franchise.

In the Avatar universe, humanity has mastered the four primal elements of nature: water, earth, fire, and air. Known as benders, these individuals can control these elements through unique martial arts movements. However, only one person can wield all four elements in harmony—the Avatar. The Avatar is tasked with maintaining the balance between people and spirits. There can only be one Avatar at a time, and upon death, they reincarnate and begin their journey anew to master the elements.

For the game, Paramount and Saber promise dynamic combat, a vibrant world, and story elements that will be both new and familiar to fans of the Avatar franchise. 'We know loyal fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender have been eager for more stories that bring them into the universe of the show, and through gaming, we're able to expand the world-building and allow fans to experience the new content in a completely immersive way,' said Doug Rosen, SVP, Games and Emerging Media at Paramount, in an interview with IGN. 'Saber Interactive has a proven track record in bringing IP-based games to life, and we are excited to co-fund this AAA title alongside them and let fans experience this world first-hand.'

This isn't the first time an Avatar game has been produced; several tie-in games have been released over the years. The most notable one, based on the sequel series The Legend of Korra, was developed by Platinum Games and received mixed reviews upon its release in 2014. Meanwhile, the Avatar universe has continued to expand, with a new live-action series on Netflix already renewed for several more seasons. An animated film titled Aang: The Last Airbender is scheduled for release in early 2026 and will feature the original show's cast in a new adventure. Additionally, Avatar Studios is working on a new animated series set after The Legend of Korra and more animated spin-offs.
