Marvel’s “Avengers: Endgame” cast members reunited in a promotional video for the Democratic ticket, which was criticized as a “new cringe” moment for the Harris campaign. Actors Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, Danai Gurira, Don Cheadle, and Paul Bettany participated in a video endorsement for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz, which was shared on Ruffalo’s social media platform on Thursday.

“We’re back. Let’s #AssembleForDemocracy. In the #ElectionEndgame, every vote counts,” Ruffalo wrote, urging people to support Harris and the Democrats. In the video, the actors playfully suggested that Harris needed a catchphrase, drawing on their past movie roles.

“How about this? I’m just off the top of my head: ‘I can do this all day,’” Evans said. “What about something punchier like—” Downey began, before Cheadle finished with, “Boom! You looking for this?” Gurira added, “Kamala forever.” Bettany remarked, “How about ‘I’m down with democracy’? It’s clean and simple.”

Cheadle jokingly said, “I’m Kamala Harris and I say down with democracy,” adding, “Yeah, together we got to tear down democracy.” Near the end of the video, he corrected himself, saying, “I’m Kamala Harris, and I am down with democracy.”

The video was widely mocked by users, who viewed it as an embarrassing and tone-deaf advertisement for Harris. “New cringe just dropped,” wrote Kimberly Ross, a contributor to the Washington Examiner. Conservative commentator Carmine Sabia quipped, “I believe we can safely say Vice President Kamala Harris has secured the Hollywood douchenozzle vote.”

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz commented, “Um, a little too much honesty here….Kamala Harris ‘tearing down democracy!’” Stephen Miller, a contributing editor at The Spectator, joked, “This is my fight song,” referencing a 2016 video featuring liberal celebrities endorsing Hillary Clinton.

Former U.S. Army Special Forces member Jim Hanson remarked, “That’s awesome. Now I never have to watch another Avengers flick ever.” Gen Z commentator Chandler Crump wrote, “As a Marvel fan, this is so sad to watch. Whatever happened to the days of ‘Republicans buy shoes too’?”

In 2016, Downey, Johansson, Ruffalo, and Cheadle were among several celebrities who appeared in an ad attacking then-candidate Donald Trump. In the video, Cheadle questioned whether viewers wanted to vote for a “racist, abusive coward who could permanently damage the fabric of our society.”

Several celebrities have publicly supported Harris ahead of the election. On Monday, singer Beyoncé spoke and introduced Harris at a rally in Houston, Texas.
