"This is not a female John Wick." Director Len Wiseman asserts at the beginning of the recently released CCXP behind-the-scenes glimpse into his forthcoming action film, Ballerina, the newest addition to the John Wick universe. However, while this statement holds true — the movie introduces Ana De Armas as Eve Macarro, a Ruska Roma-trained dancing assassin who will redefine 'bullet ballet' in Lionsgate's eagerly awaited John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum and Chapter 4 midquel — it doesn't diminish the prowess of the latest lead in the ever-expanding JWU. In fact, she appears to be just as formidable as Keanu Reeves' Baba Yaga. Check out the featurette below to understand why:
The focus here is on how Ballerina will expand the Wickiverse, with insights from franchise stalwart Chad Stahelski, director Wiseman, and the late, great Lance Reddick, discussing the rich lore and rituals of Wick's world and how Ballerina provides a fresh avenue for exploration. From our perspective, this extended look at the film's production — filled with thrilling new shots of De Armas in action, Reeves' return as Baba Yaga, and an intense flamethrower sequence (the lead actor coolly mentions, "I think I burn 106 people") — showcases the dedication of the team to deliver the exceptional fight choreography and stunts that fans have come to expect. Judging by the evidence, it seems they've nailed it.
Joining the action are familiar faces like Ian McShane's Winston, Anjelica Huston's Director, Reeves' John Wick, and Reddick's Charon, along with new additions to the franchise including Gabriel Byrne, Catalina Sandino Moreno, and Norman Reedus — the latter's reaction to seeing Reeves on set is a standout moment in the new teaser trailer. Here's a new poster for the film:
The officially titled 'From The World Of John Wick: Ballerina' is set to debut in cinemas on June 6. Until then, we'll be listening to Ian McShane calling Ana De Armas 'Baby Yaga' on repeat. Someone should print that on a t-shirt!
