Bangladesh's interim government, led by Muhammad Yunus, has pledged support for the nation's Rohingya refugee community and its crucial garment industry in Yunus' inaugural major policy speech since assuming office. The South Asian nation hosts approximately one million Rohingya refugees, who predominantly escaped from Myanmar in 2017 following a military crackdown that is currently under investigation for genocide by the United Nations.
"Our government remains committed to supporting the over one million Rohingya individuals residing in Bangladesh," Yunus stated. "We require ongoing international support for humanitarian efforts concerning the Rohingya and their eventual, safe repatriation to Myanmar with full rights and dignity."
Bangladesh boasts around 3,500 garment factories, which contribute to roughly 85% of the country's $55 billion yearly export revenue. During the political turmoil that led to the ousting of Yunus' predecessor, Sheikh Hasina, some manufacturers relocated production elsewhere.
"We will not permit any disruption to the global apparel supply chain, where we play a pivotal role," Yunus declared. He delivered these remarks during a gathering with diplomats and UN representatives in Dhaka, outlining the key objectives of his interim administration.
