All-rounder Basil Hameed was ecstatic after playing a pivotal role in the UAE's remarkable victory over hosts Namibia in a high-scoring, last-over thriller during the ICC CWC League 2 in Windhoek, Namibia, on Friday.

Chasing a target of 314, the UAE managed to secure the win in the final over with just one wicket remaining. Brilliant performances from Vishnu Sukumaran (97 off 90 balls, 8 fours, 5 sixes), Hameed (71 off 47 balls, 6 fours, 4 sixes), and Ali Naseer (38 not out off 21 balls, 2 fours, 3 sixes) ensured the UAE earned their first points in the qualifying tournament.

This crucial match came after the UAE's opening loss to the USA by 10 wickets, making it a significant win in their quest for the ICC 2027 ODI World Cup.

"It was crucial for us to secure this win, especially after our initial losses in the WCL first round and the manner in which we lost to the USA," Basil told the Khaleej Times from Windhoek on Saturday.

Basil, who has played 99 international matches for the UAE, was particularly impressed with newcomer Vishnu's performance. "Vishnu and I have played together in Kerala and in clubs. He is an elegant player," Basil said.

Hameed, who also took one wicket with his off-spin, was confident of delivering a match-winning performance when he came to bat with the UAE struggling at 114 for five in the 26th over.

The match was still in the balance when Basil and Vishnu fell within two overs after their 155-run partnership for the sixth wicket. However, young all-rounder Ali Naseer, 20, who had earlier taken three wickets with his medium-pace bowling, stepped up with a fantastic innings to secure the win in a thrilling finish.

The UAE will face the USA on September 24 before concluding their campaign against Namibia two days later. For Basil, the match against the US will mark his 100th international game.

Each match in the ICC CWC League 2 is vital as teams compete for a spot in the 2027 World Cup.
