The 28-metre Benetti motor yacht Mazal is currently undergoing a significant, multi-year rebuild at VZ Yacht. Mazal arrived at the Treviso-based yard in 2022 and is scheduled for relaunch in summer 2025.
The rebuild encompasses both exterior and interior redesigns by Italian studio Pininfarina, with the new owner aiming to optimize Mazal for charter. This led to an extension to 33 metres, accommodating a full-beam, side-opening tender garage at the stern. Giovanni Griggio of PHI Design Lab is overseeing the project as manager, owner's representative, and engineer, while inNave is responsible for the CFD and structural aspects.
The yacht was in 'really bad condition' when purchased, according to Griggio, necessitating the replacement of most of the hull. Additionally, parts of the main deck superstructure and a forward mullion were replaced to achieve a sleeker profile.
The owner shared, 'When I first went on board Mazal for sea trials, I was very impressed. She had great navigability, low noise, low fuel consumption, and a long range. I saw an opportunity to transform a true masterpiece of Italian shipyard craftsmanship into something modern yet soulful.'
The layout has been entirely reconfigured with charter use in mind, featuring a 'new convivial area' on the main deck forward with a Jacuzzi and structural sunbeds, a new exterior staircase connecting the stern cockpit to the flybridge, another sunbathing area linked to the flybridge, and a new hardtop to enhance the liveability of the flybridge guest area.
Technically, all systems have been replaced, and Mazal now boasts bow and stern thrusters, zero speed fin stabilizers, and hydraulic handling systems from Opac. Originally delivered by Benetti in 1977, Mazal is one of only three models in the Italian yard's 28S series.
