Biographical films about musicians are a common occurrence, with a wide range of quality. From the over-the-top but superficial 'Elvis' to the critically panned 'Bohemian Rhapsody' and 'Back To Black', to the more commendable 'Straight Outta Compton', 'Ray', and 'Walk The Line', music biopics seem to dominate the big screen every year. However, 'Better Man' stands out from the crowd.

Directed by Michael Gracey, known for 'The Greatest Showman', this film will explore the life and career of British icon Robbie Williams. The former Take That member and solo artist, famous for hits like 'Angels', 'Rock DJ', and 'Let Me Entertain You', is turning 50. In a unique twist, Williams will not appear as himself or be portrayed by another actor. Instead, he will be depicted as a monkey, a CGI creation brought to life by actor Jonno Davies using motion capture technology. Williams will provide the voiceover and his singing voice.

The trailer, which has already gone viral with over 6 million views, features Williams saying, “I’m Robbie Williams. I’m one of the biggest pop stars in the world. But I’ve always seen myself a little less… evolved.” Paramount Pictures describes the film as “based on the true story of the meteoric rise, dramatic fall, and remarkable resurgence of British pop superstar Robbie Williams, one of the greatest entertainers of all time.” The film captures his journey from childhood to his time in Take That and his solo career, while addressing the challenges of fame.

A new featurette explains the decision to portray Williams as a monkey. Director Michael Gracey asked Williams how he saw himself as an animal, leading to the concept of the monkey. Gracey believes this approach will make the film more engaging than traditional biopics.

The film has received positive feedback after screenings at Telluride and Toronto film festivals. It will be released in the UK on Boxing Day and expand across Europe in early next year.
