US President Joe Biden is set to deliver a poignant farewell speech at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago on Monday, symbolically handing over the reins to Kamala Harris, the party's candidate for the upcoming November election. Following his unexpected withdrawal and Harris's rapid rise, Biden is likely to receive a rousing farewell from many who previously supported his exit due to concerns over his age. The 81-year-old is expected to affirm that Harris, who made history as America's first female, Black, and South Asian vice-president, is the ideal candidate to continue his mission of safeguarding American democracy against Republican opponent Donald Trump. Harris is scheduled to join Biden briefly on stage during his evening address, a gesture intended to underscore Democratic unity in the transition of leadership. However, lingering discontent over the Biden-Harris administration's stance on Israel's conflict with Hamas in Gaza is expected to manifest in a large protest in Chicago. Biden, who spent the weekend refining his speech at Camp David in Maryland, expressed confidence in his address, stating he felt "good, real good." As a now lame-duck president in his final term, Biden is keenly aware that his legacy depends on Harris's ability to defeat Trump; failure could see him blamed for his prolonged tenure. First Lady Jill Biden, a steadfast supporter of her husband, will also address the convention. Despite the celebratory atmosphere, Biden's emotions are likely to be mixed as he observes Harris's growing popularity and voter enthusiasm, qualities he struggled to ignite during his own campaign. Biden will precede Harris's keynote speech on Thursday, a role reversal from just weeks ago. He plans to depart immediately after his speech for a six-day vacation in California, absent from the ongoing conference. Nonetheless, as he nears the end of a five-decade political career, Biden is assured of a warm reception from Democrats in Chicago. "I'm nostalgic," remarked LaurieBeth Hager, a state representative attending the convention, praising Biden as a "great president." She added, "I'll have Kleenexes packed along with me tomorrow, but I also am amazed at the courage, political courage it took for him to make this decision." Biden is fondly remembered by his party for defeating Trump in 2020 and steering America through the January 6 Capitol attack and the Covid pandemic. Despite initial pride in continuing his campaign despite a poor debate performance against Trump, there is widespread appreciation for his ultimate sacrifice. Harris has dramatically shifted the dynamics of the White House race since Biden's withdrawal, appealing to young, female, and Black voters who were disengaged from a contest between two older men. Meanwhile, former president Trump has been thrown off balance by the Democrats' move, struggling to adapt his campaign to face Harris, resorting instead to personal attacks and lengthy, unfocused speeches despite advice from senior Republicans. While Democrats convene in Chicago, Trump is set to campaign across the nation, with rallies planned in key states including Pennsylvania, Michigan, North Carolina, and Arizona.
