A significant portion of Call of Duty players have never encountered the original version of one of the franchise's iconic maps, Nuketown, according to level designer Adam Hoggatt. This realization is part of what excites Hoggatt about reintroducing the map in Black Ops 6 this November. Speaking with IGN, Hoggatt disclosed that Black Ops 6's rendition of Nuketown will be a faithful recreation of the original, enhanced with improved visuals. Over the years, the Black Ops series has showcased various iterations of Nuketown, including a futuristic version in Black Ops III, but Black Ops 6 will return to the map's origins.
"I believe the original holds a unique place in my heart. It recently dawned on me that a substantial percentage of our players might never have experienced the original," he said. "So, I'm genuinely thrilled that with Black Ops 6, we can revisit the original Nuketown, capturing the essence of the original but with visuals that surpass any previous version."
Hoggatt also discussed how Nuketown was not initially a planned map for the 2010 original Black Ops. Instead, it was an experimental project within the studio, exploring the concept of a small-scale map set in a nuclear test town. The team's positive response led to Nuketown becoming one of Call of Duty's most enduringly popular maps across all sub-brands. Although Nuketown is not one of the 16 launch maps for Black Ops 6, it will be available as free DLC on November 1. Contrary to some theories, Black Ops 6's Nuketown will not be set in the '90s like the game's campaign but will maintain the original 1950s style. Expect fast-paced, chaotic gameplay if the layout remains similar.
Black Ops 6 also features a Strike map called Warhead, set in the Nuketown neighborhood but after a bomb test, with buildings reclaimed by desert sands and debris scattered around. Additionally, the Nuketown connection extends to Warzone, where the new map, Area 99, is where Nuketown originated. Black Ops 6 is set to launch on October 25 and will be available on Game Pass at launch, at least for the premium subscription package.
